In 'Kung Fu Panda', what species is the main character Po?

In “Kung Fu Panda,” the main character Po is a giant panda.

Po is the unlikely hero of DreamWorks Animation’s franchise. He works in his adoptive father Mr. Ping’s noodle restaurant, but dreams of becoming a kung fu master. Although he initially lacks training and athletic ability, Grand Master Oogway chooses him as the Dragon Warrior.

Po is specifically a giant panda, not a red panda. Red pandas are a separate species with reddish fur, ringed tails, and a different body shape. The other choices are also important characters in the film: Monkey and Tigress are members of the Furious Five, but neither is the protagonist.

Po’s biological name is Li Lotus, while “Po” is the name he uses after being raised by Mr. Ping. Jack Black voices him in the feature films. The character’s story continues through sequels including “Kung Fu Panda 2” (2011), “Kung Fu Panda 3” (2016), and “Kung Fu Panda 4” (2024).
