In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, what position does Harry play on his school Quidditch team?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter plays Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team in J.K. Rowling’s novels.

A Seeker’s main task is to catch the Golden Snitch, a small flying ball whose capture usually ends the match and awards 150 points. Harry’s talent for flying and exceptional reflexes make him unusually effective in the position, despite being younger than many players when he joins the team.

The other Quidditch roles are Keeper, Chaser, and Beater. Keepers defend the goal hoops, Chasers handle the Quaffle and score, and Beaters use bats to redirect Bludgers. The Seeker therefore has a distinctive role rather than simply being the team’s general captain or star player.

Harry is appointed Gryffindor’s Seeker during his first year at Hogwarts. Quidditch matches recur throughout the series, and his position links athletic competition with several major plot developments.
