In Genesis, Noah was told to build an ark before the Flood.
The word “ark” comes through Latin and later European languages, while the Hebrew term in Genesis is tebah. In this story, it refers to a large vessel designed to preserve Noah, his family, and representatives of living creatures during the catastrophe. Genesis then gives instructions about its construction and contents.
The Ark is not described as a normal sailing ship with a crew, sails, or a destination. Its narrative purpose is survival and preservation rather than travel. That is why artistic reconstructions vary widely, even though the biblical text supplies a basic shape and dimensions.
The question is also separate from other famous biblical building projects. Noah builds the Ark; the Tower of Babel is built later by a different group, and the Temple is associated with later Israelite history.
