Which biblical figure is named as Noah’s father in Genesis?

The story behind the answer

Lamech is named as Noah’s father in Genesis.

Genesis 5:28–29 says that Lamech became the father of a son and named him Noah. Lamech explains the name by hoping that Noah will bring relief from the painful labor associated with the cursed ground. The genealogy places Lamech in the line descended from Seth.

This Lamech is distinct from another Lamech in Genesis 4, who belongs to Cain’s line and is associated with Adah and Zillah. The shared name is a common source of confusion when reading the early chapters of Genesis.

Genesis later identifies Noah as the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Thus Lamech is Noah’s father, while Methuselah is Noah’s grandfather according to the genealogy. These relationships are separate from later traditions that expand the family story.
