In Genesis, what was the Ark's only described entrance?

The story behind the answer

Genesis describes Noah’s Ark as having a door in its side.

Genesis 6:16 gives the construction instructions and says that the Ark was to have a door in its side. The same passage also mentions a roof or covering and three levels inside the vessel. Genesis later says that Noah entered the Ark, and that God shut him in, but it does not describe a second entrance.

The wording is significant because many paintings, models, and films invent elaborate ramps, gates, or multiple openings to make the vessel visually understandable. Those additions may be artistic choices, but the biblical construction description specifically identifies a side door.

Genesis also mentions a window, which Noah later opens, but a window is not the same as the Ark’s entrance. The passage therefore supports a precise answer: the described entrance was a door located in the side of the Ark. It does not specify which side or give the door’s dimensions.
