The Ornstein and Smough boss fight takes place in Anor Londo. The encounter occurs in the grand cathedral near the end of the city’s main route and is one of the best-known battles in Dark Souls.
Anor Londo is presented as a radiant city of towering architecture, ornate halls, and monumental statues. Its visual splendor contrasts with the hazardous areas the player explores before reaching it, including Sen’s Fortress. The city’s apparent brightness also forms part of the game’s larger mythology surrounding the gods.
Players often remember the fight as a two-boss encounter because the player must battle Dragon Slayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough together. After one is defeated, the survivor absorbs that character’s power, creating a different second phase depending on the order of defeat.
The area should not be confused with New Londo Ruins, another Lordran location. New Londo is associated with the Four Kings and has a darker, flooded atmosphere.
