Souls are spent in Dark Souls to level up, buy items, repair equipment, and carry out several other forms of progression. Enemies commonly drop souls when defeated, making them the game’s central currency and experience resource.
The player must visit a bonfire and speak with the appropriate leveling character, such as the Fire Keeper-linked progression system used in the game, to spend souls on attributes. Merchants accept souls for goods, while blacksmiths use them alongside materials for equipment improvement.
If the player dies, the carried souls remain at the death location in a bloodstain. Reaching that spot allows recovery, but dying again before retrieval causes the previous amount to disappear. This risk gives exploration and resource management unusual importance.
Souls are often confused with Humanity, which affects human form and related mechanics, or Titanite, which is an upgrade material. Those resources are separate even though all can be important during character progression.
