In Dark Souls, what boss does the player fight in the Undead Asylum courtyard?

In Dark Souls, the player fights the Asylum Demon in the Undead Asylum courtyard.

This demon is the first boss encountered in the game and serves as an early tutorial in reading attack patterns, managing stamina, and using the plunging attack. The player initially sees it from an upper walkway before dropping into its arena.

A player who returns to the Undead Asylum later can fight two related demons: the Stray Demon in the former starting arena and the Asylum Demon again in a different encounter. These names are easy to confuse because all three belong to the same demon family.

The Asylum Demon is not the Taurus Demon, which appears later in the Undead Burg. It is also distinct from the Capra Demon, fought in a compact arena below the Burg.
