In Dark Souls, how many possible ending sequences does the original game have?

The story behind the answer

The original Dark Souls has two possible ending sequences.

After defeating Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, the player reaches the Kiln of the First Flame and may choose what happens to the First Flame. The character can link the fire, continuing the Age of Fire, or leave the area without doing so, allowing the alternative ending to play.

The choice is deliberately presented without a conventional dialogue menu. Walking toward the bonfire produces one outcome, while leaving the arena produces the other. This understated structure fits Dark Souls’ broader approach to storytelling, in which major lore is communicated through environments, item descriptions, and brief character encounters.

These are two ending sequences rather than a large branching tree of conclusions. The game’s downloadable expansion adds story content and bosses, but it does not turn the original finale into a collection of many separate endings.
