Kenway is the surname of Edward, the pirate and Assassin protagonist of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
Edward Kenway begins the game as a Welsh privateer and pirate operating in the Caribbean during the early eighteenth century. After taking the clothes and identity of an Assassin, he becomes entangled in the conflict between Assassins and Templars. His ambitions initially focus on wealth and status, while the wider story gradually changes his understanding of the Brotherhood.
Edward belongs to a family line that also includes Haytham Kenway and Ratonhnhaké:ton, better known as Connor, from Assassin's Creed III. Edward is therefore Connor's grandfather, although the two protagonists live in different periods and have very different motivations. Black Flag combines naval exploration, piracy, and the series' continuing historical conflict.
