What is the Animus in the Assassin’s Creed series?

The story behind the answer

The Animus is a memory simulation machine in the Assassin’s Creed series.

The device allows a person in the present to experience genetic memories inherited from an ancestor. In the games, users lie inside the Animus while its technology reconstructs historical experiences as an interactive simulation. This framing device connects modern-day characters with the historical protagonists controlled by the player.

Desmond Miles is the best-known early Animus user. Through his ancestors, including Altaïr and Ezio, he accesses information sought by Abstergo, the modern organization linked to the Templar Order. Later games introduce newer versions of the technology and different ways to access genetic memories.

The Animus is fictional and should not be confused with ordinary virtual-reality equipment or a time machine. Characters do not physically travel into the past; they experience reconstructed memories. The machine also explains why the series can move between historical eras while retaining a modern-day storyline.
