In the first Assassin's Creed game, what is the name of the protagonist who serves the Levantine Assassins?

The story behind the answer

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the protagonist of the first Assassin's Creed game and a senior member of the Levantine Assassins. The 2007 game follows Altaïr during the Third Crusade, mainly in the cities of Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus.

Altaïr begins the story as an exceptionally skilled but arrogant Assassin whose rank is stripped after a failed mission. His mentor, Al Mualim, sends him to eliminate nine targets connected with the Templar Order. Completing those missions gradually restores Altaïr's status while exposing a conspiracy involving the Apple of Eden.

The name Altaïr comes from the Arabic name for the star Altair, while Ibn-La'Ahad means “son of no one.” Later games revisit Altaïr's life, including his leadership of Masyaf and his influence on the Brotherhood's methods. He is distinct from Ezio, the Renaissance hero introduced in Assassin's Creed II.
