In the original 2007 Assassin's Creed, which historical city serves as Al Mualim's headquarters?

The story behind the answer

In the original 2007 Assassin's Creed, Masyaf serves as Al Mualim's headquarters. The mountain fortress is the main base of the Assassin Brotherhood led by Al Mualim, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's mentor.

Masyaf is presented as a fortified settlement in the Levant during the Third Crusade. Altaïr returns there between investigations, receives new assignments, and reports his progress. Its elevated position and walls emphasize the Brotherhood's secrecy and military discipline.

The game also connects Masyaf to the real medieval Nizari Ismaili stronghold in present-day Syria. Although the game dramatizes its appearance and role, the historical location is associated with Rashid al-Din Sinan, often called the Old Man of the Mountain. Masyaf should not be confused with the cities where Altaïr carries out most of his assassinations.
