In 'Aladdin', what is the name of the magical spirit in the lamp?

The story behind the answer

In “Aladdin,” the magical spirit in the lamp is the Genie.

The Genie is released when Aladdin rubs the enchanted oil lamp in the Cave of Wonders. He explains that he can grant three wishes, although the film places limits on what he can do: he cannot kill someone, make someone fall in love, resurrect the dead, or grant extra wishes. Aladdin ultimately promises to use his third wish to free him.

The character is a jinn, a supernatural being associated with Arabic and Islamic folklore, though Disney presents him in a highly comic, musical style. The 1992 animated film’s Genie was voiced by Robin Williams, whose improvisational performance became one of the movie’s defining features. Dan Castellaneta later voiced the character in several animated productions, while Will Smith played him in the 2019 live-action adaptation.

A common mix-up is calling the character “the genie in the bottle.” In this film, he is specifically released from a lamp, and his character is generally called simply the Genie.
