How many Rings of Power were given to the Dwarf-lords in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology?

The story behind the answer

Seven Rings of Power were given to the Dwarf-lords in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology.

The distribution of the Rings is summarized in the famous verse beginning, “Three Rings for the Elven-kings,” followed by seven for the Dwarf-lords and nine for mortal Men. The Rings were made during the Second Age, when Sauron influenced the creation of the Rings of Power while seeking a means to dominate their bearers.

The Dwarves proved difficult to control. Their Rings intensified their owners’ natural desire for wealth, helping fuel the accumulation of treasure. Dragons later destroyed or seized several of the Dwarf-rings, while Sauron recovered others. By the time of The Lord of the Rings, none remained securely in Dwarven possession.

The number seven is sometimes confused with the total number of lesser rings or with the nine Rings held by Men. Tolkien’s ring distribution is deliberately numerical and memorable: three for Elves, seven for Dwarves, nine for Men, and one ruling Ring for Sauron.
