In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo Baggins’s sword is named Sting. Bilbo Baggins originally found the small Elvish blade in a troll-hoard during the events of The Hobbit.
Although Sting is short by human standards, it is an effective weapon for a hobbit. Its most famous magical feature is a blue glow that appears when Orcs or other servants of the Enemy are nearby. Frodo carries it during the journey from the Shire to Mordor.
The sword’s name is linked to its usefulness against giant spiders. Bilbo used it against the spiders of Mirkwood and gave it its name after describing how it felt like being bitten by a sting. Frodo later used it against Shelob.
Sting is sometimes confused with other famous Tolkien blades. Glamdring belonged to Gandalf, Orcrist belonged to Thorin Oakenshield, and Andúril was Aragorn’s reforged sword.
