Quenya is the classical Elvish language created by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Tolkien based much of Quenya’s sound and structure on Finnish, while also drawing on his broad knowledge of historical languages. Within his fictional history, Quenya was associated especially with the High Elves and the ancient realm of Valinor. It functions in the legendarium as a prestigious, learned language.
Quenya is often confused with Sindarin, another major Elvish language. Sindarin became more widely spoken in Middle-earth during the later histories, whereas Quenya retained a more formal and ceremonial role. Both languages belong to Tolkien’s carefully developed linguistic world, but they are not interchangeable.
Tolkien worked on Elvish languages for decades, revising vocabulary and grammar as his mythology developed. His linguistic inventions were not merely collections of invented words; he designed historical relationships, sound changes, and writing traditions to make them resemble real language families.
