Who edited Tolkien’s posthumous collection Unfinished Tales?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Tolkien edited Unfinished Tales, which was published posthumously in 1980. The book presents incomplete narratives and background materials from different periods of J.R.R. Tolkien’s writing about Middle-earth.

Christopher organized, selected and sometimes lightly edited his father’s manuscripts so that readers could follow stories such as “The Disaster of the Gladden Fields,” “The Children of Húrin” material and accounts of Númenor. He supplied extensive editorial notes identifying contradictions and variant versions.

Unfinished Tales is not a single continuous novel. Its contents range from First Age legends to Third Age history, and some sections are fragmentary. Christopher Tolkien later edited many additional volumes, including The History of Middle-earth, making him the principal posthumous editor of his father’s legendarium.
