Minas Tirith is the fictional city ruled by Aragorn after the War of the Ring. It is the capital of Gondor, built on seven levels against the eastern side of Mount Mindolluin and defended by concentric walls and gates.
The city was originally called Minas Anor, meaning “Tower of the Sun.” After Minas Ithil fell to Sauron’s forces and was renamed Minas Morgul, Minas Anor became known as Minas Tirith, “Tower of Guard.” Its white stone and high position give it the visual identity associated with Gondor.
During The Return of the King, Minas Tirith endures the assault of Sauron’s armies. Aragorn arrives with reinforcements, and after victory he is crowned King Elessar. The city then serves as the principal seat of the restored kingdom.
Minas Tirith is sometimes confused with Minas Morgul, its hostile counterpart in the east. The two names share “Minas,” meaning tower, but represent opposing powers.
