What is the name of Aragorn’s father in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium?
Answer
Arathorn II
Answer
Arathorn II
Arathorn II is the father of Aragorn in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Arathorn II was a Dúnadan and the sixteenth Chieftain of the Dúnedain of the North. He married Gilraen and became the father of Aragorn, who was born in 2931 of the Third Age. Arathorn was killed when Aragorn was only two years old.
His death occurred during a hunt for Orcs. An Orc arrow struck him in the eye, ending his brief leadership of the northern Rangers. Aragorn was then raised in Rivendell under the protection of Elrond, who concealed his royal identity while he was young.
Arathorn is sometimes confused with Arador, Aragorn’s grandfather, or with Isildur, Aragorn’s distant ancestor. The Roman numeral is important because Tolkien’s family histories include several characters named Arathorn.
