How many points did Leo Neugebauer score to win the men’s decathlon at Birmingham 2026?

The story behind the answer

Leo Neugebauer won the men’s decathlon at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham with 8,611 points.

The German athlete finished ahead of compatriot Niklas Kaul, who scored 8,573 points. Norway’s Sander Skotheim took bronze with 8,433 points. Neugebauer’s victory was therefore decided by a 38-point margin over Kaul.

The decathlon consists of ten events contested across two days: 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 metres, 110-metre hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 metres. Competitors receive points for their performances in every event, and the highest combined total wins.

The decathlon should not be confused with the women’s heptathlon, which contains seven events. Ireland’s Kate O’Connor won that competition in Birmingham. Neugebauer’s 8,611 points belonged specifically to the men’s ten-event contest.
