J.K. Rowling’s original Harry Potter series consists of seven novels.
The series begins with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and ends with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Across the books, Harry’s years at Hogwarts are followed alongside the return of Lord Voldemort and the resistance against him.
The seven-book structure is distinct from the film series, which contains eight films because the final novel was adapted in two parts. That split can lead people to answer eight when asked about the novels, but there are seven original books.
Rowling published the novels between 1997 and 2007. The series has also been supplemented by related works, including Quidditch Through the Ages, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard, but those are not part of the original seven-novel sequence.
