How many Harry Potter films were released in the main film series based on J.K. Rowling’s books?

The story behind the answer

Eight Harry Potter films were released in the main film series based on J.K. Rowling’s books.

The series adapted seven novels into eight movies because the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was divided into Part 1 and Part 2. The first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, arrived in 2001, and the final film was released in 2011.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson played Harry, Ron, and Hermione throughout the main series. Different directors handled the installments: Chris Columbus directed the first two, Alfonso Cuarón directed the third, Mike Newell directed the fourth, and David Yates directed the final four.

The eight-film count excludes the later Fantastic Beasts movies, which are set in the same Wizarding World but follow different characters and an earlier period. It also excludes stage productions and television adaptations. Thus, “eight” describes the original Harry Potter movie cycle, not every screen project connected with Rowling’s fictional universe.
