Eight Harry Potter films were adapted from J.K. Rowling’s seven novels.
The film series began with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001 and concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011. The final novel was split into two films, creating eight movies from seven books.
The decision to divide Deathly Hallows allowed the filmmakers to include more of the book’s plot and characters. Part 1 was released in 2010, and Part 2 followed in 2011. The other six novels each received one principal film adaptation.
This count does not include the Fantastic Beasts films, which are set in the same wider Wizarding World but are not adaptations of the seven Harry Potter novels. Nor does it count the stage production Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which is a separate theatrical work.
