Jackie Stewart won three Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championships. The Scottish driver became champion in 1969, 1971, and 1973, racing primarily for the Tyrrell team.
Stewart won the 1969 title with Matra International, then captured his next two championships with Tyrrell. He retired at the end of the 1973 season after winning 27 Grands Prix, a record that stood until Alain Prost passed it in 1987.
Beyond his results, Stewart became a major advocate for driver safety. He campaigned for better medical facilities, barriers, seat belts, and track protection after witnessing numerous fatal accidents. His championship total is sometimes confused with his Grand Prix win total, but the two figures are very different: three titles and 27 race victories.
