J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplays for three Fantastic Beasts films.
The films are Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, released in 2016; Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, released in 2018; and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, released in 2022. Rowling received screenplay credit on all three.
The series is set in the Wizarding World decades before the Harry Potter story. Its central character is Newt Scamander, a magizoologist whose fictional textbook is mentioned in the Harry Potter novels. Eddie Redmayne portrayed Newt in the film series.
The films were planned as a five-film series, but only three were released. This can cause confusion between the number of intended installments and the number of completed films with Rowling screenplay credits. The first movie was also Rowling’s screenwriting debut, with the screenplay published in book form alongside the film’s release.
