The 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham featured 50 events.
That total covered the full senior outdoor programme across men’s, women’s and mixed competition. Track races ranged from sprints and middle-distance events to the 10,000 metres, hurdles and steeplechase. Field events included jumps and throws, while the combined events were the decathlon and heptathlon.
The programme also included relays, marathon races, race walks and mixed relays. This broad structure is why the championships are much larger than a meeting focused only on stadium track finals.
The number 50 refers to the official championship-event count, not the number of individual heats, qualifying rounds or medal ceremonies. Those preliminary stages add many races and attempts, but they do not increase the number of events listed in the championships programme.
