How many engines power the Airbus A340-600?
Answer
Four
Answer
Four
The Airbus A340-600 is powered by four engines.
The A340-600 is the longest member of the A340 family and uses four Rolls-Royce Trent 556 turbofan engines. Its four-engine arrangement reflects the long-haul design priorities of the period when the aircraft was developed, before newer twin-engine aircraft became capable of serving many of the same routes.
The aircraft entered service with Virgin Atlantic in 2002. Its long fuselage gave it substantial passenger capacity, while its four engines supported long-distance operations. However, improvements in twin-engine reliability and fuel efficiency later made large four-engine airliners less attractive to airlines.
The A340 family includes four-engine variants throughout, but engine models differ between versions. The A340-600 specifically uses the Trent 500 series, so the number of engines and the engine manufacturer are separate facts.
