How many engines does the Airbus A340-500 have?

The story behind the answer

The Airbus A340-500 has four engines.

The A340-500 belongs to Airbus’s four-engine A340 family, which was developed for long-range routes. Its four Rolls-Royce Trent 553 engines gave it the performance needed for very long flights, including services that could exceed 15 hours. The A340-500 first flew in 2002 and entered service with Singapore Airlines in 2003.

The four-engine layout avoided the earlier long-range restrictions associated with twin-engine aircraft, although improvements in twin-engine reliability later reduced the commercial advantage of four engines. The A340-500’s large fuel capacity and long fuselage supported exceptional range, but operating four engines was comparatively expensive.

The A340 family also included the shorter A340-200, the A340-300, and the stretched A340-600. All four variants used four engines, unlike Airbus’s later A330 and A350 families.
