Glasgow 2026 was the fourth Commonwealth Games hosted in Scotland.
Scotland’s first Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh in 1970. Edinburgh hosted the event again in 1986, making it the only Scottish city to stage the Games twice before Glasgow’s return to the calendar. Glasgow then hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games, followed by the 2026 edition.
The wording can cause a geographic mix-up because Scotland is one of the four nations of the United Kingdom, alongside England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Commonwealth Games are organized with separate national teams for those nations, so Glasgow’s host nation is Scotland, not the United Kingdom as a single team.
Glasgow 2026 was planned as a compact event using existing venues and a reduced sports programme. It followed a major change in host arrangements after Victoria, Australia, withdrew from hosting the Games.
