Before 2026, Glasgow last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
Known officially as the XX Commonwealth Games and commonly called Glasgow 2014, the event ran from 23 July to 3 August 2014. It brought roughly 4,950 athletes from 71 Commonwealth teams to Scotland and featured 18 sports. Glasgow’s successful bid had defeated Abuja, Nigeria, in a 2007 vote.
The 2014 Games were not Scotland’s first Commonwealth Games. Edinburgh hosted in 1970 and again in 1986, making Glasgow 2014 Scotland’s third edition overall. The 2026 event therefore returned to Glasgow after a 12-year gap, rather than following the 2022 Games in the same city.
The most likely confusion is 2022, which was the immediately preceding Commonwealth Games but took place in Birmingham, England. The years 2002 and 1986 were also Commonwealth Games years, yet neither was Glasgow’s most recent hosting occasion before 2026.
