At which London railway station is the fictional Platform 9¾ shown in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter stories?

The story behind the answer

The fictional Platform 9¾ in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter stories is associated with King’s Cross Station in London.

Harry and other young witches and wizards use Platform 9¾ to board the Hogwarts Express. In the books, the platform is hidden between platforms 9 and 10 and can be reached by passing through a magical barrier.

The real King’s Cross station has ordinary platforms, but its architecture and railway identity made it a natural setting for the story. A commemorative trolley installed at the station became a popular visitor attraction, and a Harry Potter shop operates nearby.

The film series used visual arrangements that did not always match the real platform layout. Some railway scenes were filmed at King’s Cross, while nearby St Pancras station was used for exterior imagery. This explains why photographs may show both stations.
