Answer
Kailasa Temple
At Ellora Caves, Cave 16 is the monolithic Kailasa Temple.
The Kailasa Temple is a Hindu monument dedicated to Shiva and is widely regarded as the most spectacular structure at Ellora. Rather than being assembled from separate blocks, it was excavated downward and outward from a single mass of basalt, leaving a freestanding, multi-level temple in the surrounding courtyard.
Construction is generally attributed to the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I, who ruled in the eighth century. The complex includes a central shrine, a mandapa, a tower inspired by Mount Kailash and a separate image of Nandi, Shiva’s sacred bull. Sculptors also covered the monument with large reliefs, including scenes connected with the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Cave 16 belongs to Ellora’s Hindu group, which sits alongside Buddhist and Jain monuments carved into the same escarpment. The name is often written Kailasa, Kailash or Kailasha; these forms refer to the same temple. It should not be confused with the Shore Temple or Brihadeeswara Temple, which are separate South Indian monuments built in different settings and traditions.
