Why was the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend scheduled one week later than usual?

The story behind the answer

The 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend was scheduled one week later than usual because of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The World Cup was played during the summer of 2026, with the final scheduled for 19 July. The Premier League began on 21 August, giving players 33 days between the World Cup final and the league’s first match.

The tournament was expanded to 48 teams and hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Its enlarged format affected the wider football calendar, so the Premier League also moved its final matchweek back by one week.

The later start should not be confused with a domestic cup postponement. The principal reason was the international tournament’s position in the off-season and the need to provide players with sufficient recovery time before league competition began.
