Whose own goal opened Brighton’s 4–0 win over Aston Villa on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend?

The story behind the answer

Victor Nilsson Lindelöf’s own goal opened Brighton & Hove Albion’s 4–0 win over Aston Villa on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.

The defender inadvertently put the ball into his own net during the first half at Brighton’s American Express Stadium on 23 August 2026. That own goal gave Brighton an early lead and was followed by further strikes from Maxim De Cuyper and Jack Hinshelwood, putting the hosts in complete control.

Brighton scored four times before half-time and kept Aston Villa scoreless throughout the match. The result was the largest victory of the opening round, although Newcastle United’s 2–2 draw with Liverpool also produced four total goals.

Nilsson Lindelöf is a Swedish international centre-back who previously captained Manchester United. Own goals are credited to the player whose touch sends the ball into his own goal, even when the attacking team created the pressure or shot that caused the mistake.

The win gave Brighton an emphatic start under Fabian Hürzeler, while Villa left Sussex without scoring.
