Why was the 2026–27 Premier League opening round delayed by one week?

The story behind the answer

The 2026–27 Premier League opening round was delayed by one week because of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The World Cup was held during the summer of 2026, with the final played on 19 July. The Premier League therefore began on 21 August rather than following its more familiar mid-August pattern. The later start provided additional recovery time after the expanded tournament and helped protect the preparation period for players and clubs.

The 2026 World Cup was expanded to 48 teams and hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States. Its presence affected the domestic calendar beyond the opening date: the Premier League also scheduled its final matchweek one week later than usual, with the season due to finish on 30 May 2027.

The delay was not caused by the UEFA European Championship or the Olympic Games. Those events were not the calendar reason given for the Premier League’s altered start. The relevant tournament was FIFA’s global men’s football competition.
