Why was Brighton & Hove Albion’s 2026–27 Premier League opener scheduled for Sunday rather than Saturday?

The story behind the answer

Brighton & Hove Albion’s 2026–27 Premier League opener was scheduled for Sunday because of the UEFA Conference League qualification play-offs.

Brighton had a Conference League qualification play-off match on the preceding Thursday. The Premier League therefore placed Brighton’s league fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday 23 August at 14:00 BST.

This scheduling decision helped avoid an unusually short turnaround between European and domestic matches. It also explains why Brighton versus Aston Villa was not part of Saturday’s group of opening-round fixtures.

The Premier League regularly adjusts fixtures for clubs involved in UEFA competitions. During this opening round, Manchester City versus Bournemouth also began at 14:00 on Sunday, while Newcastle United versus Liverpool followed at 16:30.
