Why did the 2026–27 Premier League season start on 21 August, one week later than usual?

The story behind the answer

The 2026–27 Premier League season started on 21 August, one week later than usual, because the 2026 FIFA World Cup affected the football calendar.

The World Cup was held during the off-season and featured an expanded 48-team tournament. The later Premier League start was intended to provide players with more recovery time after the international competition and to protect the schedule around the tournament.

The Premier League stated that the revised start allowed 89 clear days from the end of the 2025–26 season and 33 days from the World Cup final on 19 July. Arsenal versus Coventry City then opened the league campaign on Friday 21 August.

The change affected the opening round and the planned final matchweek, which was also moved by one week. It was not caused by a domestic cup competition, a single club’s European schedule or a weather postponement.
