Answer
The 2026 FIFA World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup caused the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend to start later than usual.
The Premier League began on 21 August 2026, one week later than the customary mid-August start. The change followed the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, which featured 48 teams and was scheduled during the summer before the domestic season.
The World Cup final was scheduled for 19 July 2026. Delaying the league opening gave players and clubs more time between the end of the tournament and the start of the Premier League campaign. The league also stated that the season’s usual opening fixtures and final matchweek were postponed by one week.
The delayed opening did not reduce the number of league matches. The season still consisted of 380 fixtures across 33 weekend rounds and five midweek rounds. The opening round itself ran from Friday, 21 August to Monday, 24 August.
