Why did the 2026–27 Premier League opening round begin later than usual?

The story behind the answer

The 2026–27 Premier League opening round began later than usual because of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament featured an expanded field of 48 teams and was held during the summer before the domestic season. The Premier League therefore began on 21 August 2026, one week later than its usual starting point.

The schedule also allowed 33 clear days between the World Cup final on 19 July and the first Premier League match. This helped provide players with recovery time before returning to club competition.

The delay was not caused by the Premier League fixture release or by a domestic cup competition. The league’s full fixture list was published on 19 June 2026, but the later start date had already been shaped by the international tournament calendar.
