Who wrote the screenplay for the original Rocky film?

The story behind the answer

Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay for the original Rocky film. He also played Rocky Balboa, turning the part into the breakthrough role that established him as a major movie star.

Stallone wrote the screenplay after watching Muhammad Ali fight Chuck Wepner in March 1975. The bout reportedly inspired him to develop a story about an obscure Philadelphia boxer who receives an extraordinary opportunity to fight the world champion. Stallone completed an early screenplay draft in only a few days, though the film’s production and financing took much longer to arrange.

United Artists bought the screenplay but wanted a better-known actor for the lead. Stallone insisted on playing Rocky himself, even when offered substantially more money to sell the script without starring. That decision helped preserve the character’s distinctive voice and underdog perspective.

John G. Avildsen directed Rocky, but he did not write it. Carl Weathers played Apollo Creed, Rocky’s opponent, and Bill Conti composed the famous score. Released in 1976, Rocky won the Academy Award for Best Picture, while Stallone received Oscar nominations for both acting and screenwriting.
