Which Rocky film was released immediately after Rocky IV?

The story behind the answer

Which Rocky film was released immediately after Rocky IV? Rocky V.

Rocky V was released immediately after Rocky IV in the franchise’s main film sequence. Rocky IV arrived in 1985, while Rocky V followed in 1990, making it the fifth numbered installment and a direct continuation of the story involving Ivan Drago.

The film begins after Rocky’s bout with Drago and focuses on the consequences of the fight, including Rocky’s financial troubles and the medical problems that force him to retire. Back in Philadelphia, Rocky takes on the role of trainer to Tommy Gunn, while also trying to repair his relationship with his son, Robert.

Rocky V returned John G. Avildsen, director of the original 1976 Rocky, to the series. It was written by and starred Sylvester Stallone, with Talia Shire returning as Adrian. The film is often confused with Rocky Balboa because that movie also follows Rocky after retirement, but Rocky Balboa was released much later, in 2006, sixteen years after Rocky V.
