Who wrote How Long, covered by the Eagles in 2007?

The story behind the answer

Who wrote “How Long,” covered by the Eagles in 2007? JD Souther wrote it. The song was composed in 1971 and first recorded by Souther for his 1972 debut album, John David Souther.

Souther was closely connected to the Eagles’ early history. He and Glenn Frey were friends, roommates, and collaborators in Los Angeles, and Souther helped shape the Southern California country-rock sound. The Eagles had already performed “How Long” in concert during the early 1970s, long before recording their studio version.

The Eagles finally released their cover in 2007 on Long Road Out of Eden, their first full studio album since 1979. Their recording earned the group a 2008 Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. A common mix-up is confusing Souther with the writers of other Eagles-associated songs, such as Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, or Jack Tempchin.
