Who won the first Olympic women's pole-vault title at Sydney 2000?
Answer
Stacy Dragila
Answer
Stacy Dragila
Stacy Dragila won the first Olympic women’s pole-vault title at Sydney 2000.
Women’s pole vault made its Olympic debut at the Sydney Games. Dragila of the United States cleared 4.60 metres to win the gold medal, while Australia’s Tatiana Grigorieva took silver and Vala Flosadóttir of Iceland won bronze.
The event’s Olympic introduction followed major growth in women’s pole vault during the 1990s. Improvements in fiberglass poles, landing systems, coaching and competition opportunities helped athletes reach heights that had once been associated mainly with men’s vaulting.
Dragila had already won the inaugural women’s pole vault at the 1997 World Indoor Championships and became the first world outdoor champion in the event in 1999. Her Sydney victory made her the first woman to win an Olympic pole-vault title.
