Who holds the Olympic men's marathon record with 2:06:32?

The story behind the answer

Samuel Wanjiru holds the Olympic men's marathon record with 2:06:32, set at Beijing 2008.

Wanjiru won Kenya's first Olympic marathon gold medal in the race, defeating Morocco's Jaouad Gharib in demanding heat and humidity. His winning time was the fastest ever recorded in an Olympic marathon and remains the Olympic record.

The Olympic marathon is 42.195 kilometres, or 26 miles 385 yards. That distance was standardized internationally in 1921, after earlier races had varied in length. Olympic marathon courses are road courses, so times can be influenced by weather, elevation, turns and surface conditions.

Wanjiru was only 21 when he won in Beijing. His aggressive racing style and willingness to push the pace made the final memorable. The Olympic record is separate from the world record, because championship courses and race conditions differ from the fastest record-eligible marathon settings.
