Which athlete became the first Olympic champion in the women’s 3,000-metre steeplechase at Beijing 2008?

The story behind the answer

Gulnara Galkina became the first Olympic champion in the women’s 3,000-metre steeplechase at Beijing 2008.

Representing Russia, Galkina won the inaugural Olympic final in 8:58.81, setting a world record in the process. Kenya’s Eunice Jepkorir took silver and Russia’s Tatyana Petrova won bronze. Galkina’s performance made her the first woman to break nine minutes in the Olympic steeplechase.

The event requires athletes to complete 3,000 metres while negotiating fixed barriers and seven water jumps. Unlike ordinary hurdles, the steeplechase barriers do not collapse when struck, so rhythm and obstacle technique are essential.

Women’s steeplechase had become an established international event before Beijing, but the 2008 Games marked its Olympic debut. Galkina’s record was later surpassed, yet her place as the first Olympic champion remains permanent in the event’s history.
