Who won the first Olympic women's discus throw title?
Answer
Halina Konopacka
Answer
Halina Konopacka
Halina Konopacka won the first Olympic women's discus throw title at Amsterdam 1928.
The Polish athlete threw 39.62 metres in the final, setting a world record and becoming Poland’s first Olympic champion. She competed in a distinctive red beret, which became part of her public image.
Women’s athletics was introduced to the Olympic program at Amsterdam, although the initial program was limited. The discus was among the events contested, and Konopacka’s victory made her one of the leading figures in early women’s Olympic sport.
A common mix-up is to associate the first women’s Olympic discus champion with later champions such as Lillian Copeland or Tamara Press. Copeland won in 1932, while Press won in 1960 and 1964.
