Which athlete became the first Moroccan Olympic champion by winning the 1984 400-metre hurdles?
Answer
Nawal El Moutawakel
Answer
Nawal El Moutawakel
Nawal El Moutawakel became Morocco’s first Olympic champion by winning the women’s 400-metre hurdles at Los Angeles 1984.
She won the final in 54.61 seconds, becoming the first Moroccan woman to compete in an Olympic final and the first Moroccan athlete of either sex to win gold. Her victory also made her the first Muslim woman from Africa to win an Olympic title.
El Moutawakel’s success had national significance in Morocco, where an annual holiday was declared in her honour after the win. She later became a leading sports administrator and served as an International Olympic Committee vice-president.
The 400-metre hurdles requires athletes to clear ten hurdles around one lap of the track. El Moutawakel’s title is distinct from Morocco’s later Olympic athletics successes, including Saïd Aouita’s 1984 5,000-metre victory.
