At which Summer Olympics did women’s boxing make its debut?

The story behind the answer

Women’s boxing made its Olympic debut at the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

The inaugural women’s Olympic boxing program included three weight classes: flyweight, lightweight, and middleweight. Nicola Adams of Great Britain won the flyweight title, making her the first female Olympic boxing champion. Katie Taylor of Ireland won lightweight gold, while Claressa Shields of the United States won middleweight gold.

Women had competed in Olympic boxing demonstrations before London, but those appearances did not make the sport part of the official medal program. The 2012 inclusion therefore represented the first opportunity for women boxers to win recognized Olympic medals.

Men’s boxing had been part of the modern Olympic program since St. Louis 1904, although it was absent from the 1912 Games because Swedish law prohibited the sport. Women’s boxing expanded to five weight classes at Rio 2016.
