Olga Bondarenko
Answer
Olga Bondarenko
Olga Bondarenko won the first Olympic women's 10,000 metres title at Seoul in 1988.
Bondarenko represented the Soviet Union and won in 31:05.21. The race was the first Olympic women's 10,000 metres final, extending the women's Olympic distance programme beyond the 3000 metres.
Her victory came after a close contest with compatriot Yelena Sipatova, who finished second. Bondarenko's result made her the inaugural Olympic champion in an event that later became a central championship race for elite women distance runners.
The women's 10,000 metres remained on the Olympic programme after the 3000 metres was replaced by the 5000 metres in 1996. Ethiopia's Derartu Tulu became the event's next champion at Barcelona in 1992.
